Budapest Keleti (means Eastern station) is the main international and local railway spot of the whole Hungarian railways. It was built at the end of the 19th century in a beautiful eclectic style.
Nowadays, the station hosts Railjet train arrival and departures too. Therefore, we gathered all the information about Budapest's main train station to make your travel more comfortable. |
Most of the trains coming to Budapest from the other countries arrive and depart from Budapest Keleti train station, which hosts its prominent place in the list of historic European train station buildings.
The station has 18 platforms that receive trains from Austria, Germany, Slovakia, Poland, and many other countries. Platforms 6 to 9 are located under the beautiful eclectic roof of the station, while platforms 1 - 5 are moved to the north from the main station facade with easy access from platform 6. The same relates to the platforms 10 - 18, except those that are moved to the south. When it comes to the Railjet trains arrival and departure, those are usually hosted on platform 9 with its direction from Budapest to Vienna, Salzburg, Munich, and Zurich. |
There are luggage lockers available as well at the near end of platform 9. ATMs are located next to the ticket collection machine, but remember about cash withdrawal limits and fees; check with your bank first.
Also, there are few restaurants available from 8 am to 8 pm that accepts international credit cards. On the opposite side of the road from the train station, McDonald's, Burger King, and KFC are available. |
The train station is located on the Pest side of the city, within walking distance from the main attractions and hotels. If you're not carrying lots of luggage with you, you can reach the city center in less than 30 minutes. It is pretty easy to get Keleti station from every corner of Budapest using the local metro system.
The metro station is peacefully nested under the train station building and hosts the same name, Keleti pályaudvar. Keleti subway station belongs to the "red" line and has direct access to the train station building. |
